“Selfie-Discipline” #29 – Declutter Your Medicine Cabinet

Medicine cabinets are wonderful things, but they tend to be clutter collectors. We regularly add new items, but rarely go through and take stuff out. The good news, this is a quick little project that is both visually rewarding and good for your health. Perfect for a cold or rainy day.

Begin by taking everything out. As you remove each item, check the expiration date. If it is expired, set it aside for disposal. Otherwise, group like items together. Once the cabinet is empty, wipe it out.

Reload the items you want to keep. If things topple over, you can get small containers that fit inside of medicine cabinets. Also, note any expired or old items you might want to replace.

Expired medication should not go into the trashcan or into the toilet. Instead, bag it up and drop it off for safe disposal. Many police stations now offer this service, as well as pharmacies.

When is the last time you cleared out your medicine cabinet?

  1. I DID THIS RECENTLY. IT’S A NEVER ENDING DUTY HOWEVER AND THINGS DO EXPIRE RATHER QUICKLY-THINGS LIKE COUGH MEDICINES THAT YOU BUY WHEN YOU’RE SICK AND THEN FORGET ABOUT THEM FOR MONTHS OR EVEN YEARS IF YOU DON’T CLEAN THEM OUT AT LEAST ONCE A YEAR. I WILL PROBABLY NEED TO DO IT AGAIN SOON.

    1. Cough medicine is a good one. That happens in my house too. Apparently I had a prescription bottle in my daughter’s medicine cabinet and didn’t realize it until she came home at Christmas and reminded me!

  2. Cassidy did this last week and oh boy, it needed it. I just had so much medication from my job. And it was stuff that was old or unused, which is GOOD. Although of course, this is the week that we’re all sick or recovering from sick. But it’s so good to be able to see into the cabinet for only what you need!

    1. Nothing is worse than needing a medication and being unable to find it, right? When all the bottles and boxes start tumbling out and you feel lousy…tell Cassidy I’m cheering him over here!
