“Selfie-Discipline” #21 – Declutter Your Bag

Over time, stuff ends up in the bags we carry around, including backpacks, briefcases, purses, totes, and carryall bags. Whether you are a student, office professional, or Mom on the go, odds are you are constantly dropping things into your bag. Over time, this can result in a bit of a mess.

Fortunately, the solution is easy. Every quarter, empty the bag out completely. Just dump it on a table. Throw away the trash (broken pens, wrappers, unneeded paperwork, empty lip balm, old make-up, etc.). Next, remove whatever you don’t need to be hauling around and put it back where it belongs in your space. If the bag is dirty, shake it out over a trashcan to get rid of the accumulated “dust.”

Before you reload, take a minute to see if you can improve your system. For example, could you add a small, zippered bag to hold tiny items? Or, could you assign certain objects to particular pockets in your bag? Perhaps you could add a carabineer to hold your keys. Be intentional as you return items to your bag to make it as easy as possible to quickly find what you need.

When is the last time you cleaned out your bag?

  1. I cleaned my bag out right after Christmas as I switched my Christmas bag for another purse non-Christmas/holiday-related. So, right now I think I am OK. But I do like the idea of adding a small zippered bag to hold tiny items if need be to be even more organized. So, thanks for the great suggestion 😉

  2. I’M PRETTY GOOD ABOUT THIS. I LIKE TO ,MAKE MY BAG AS LIGHTWEIGHT AS POSSIBLE SO I REGULARLY CLEAN IT OUT. I ALSO DUMP EVERYTHING AND THROW IT IN THE WASHER AS MINE IS WASHABLE. MINE HAS A LOT OF POCKETS AND I HAVE MADE IT A HABIT TO KEEP CERTAIN THINGS IN EACH OF THEM. EVEN SO, I’M SURE IF I CHECKED RIGHT NOW I WOULD FIND SOME THINGS IN THE SIDE POCKETS THAT CAN BE REMOVED. THANKS FOR THE REMINDER.

    1. I love that you can throw your bag in the washing machine, Dianne. How great! Keeping your bag to a minimum weight not only makes it easier to carry, but also keeps the clutter at bay. Two benefits for the price of one!

  3. I tend to only hold onto purses for like.. a year or two. So every time I get a new one, that’s high time to just declutter it all! It’s not a perfect science, of course. I do have to do it more than once a year.
    So many., kid scraps.
