Selfie-Discipline #1: Make The Bed

New Year’s Day may be the start of a new year, but EVERY day you get the chance to make a fresh start. One of the best habits you can form is to make your bed as soon as you get up.

Making your bed immediately is a great way to establish order. As the focal point of the room, an attractive bed sets a tone of serenity in this important space. When you make your bed first thing in the morning, you start your day with a mindset of maintaining an organized space. It also boosts your sense of control over your environment.

Another benefit of making the bed is that you pick up any decorative pillows up from the ground, freeing the floor space for walking.

This is an easy habit to form because you can get it done before the day’s tasks start flooding in. Do you make your bed every day? Would you like to give it a try?

  1. That IS a good idea! I know people – many people – can’t stand an unmade bed. I will say that when I first wake up, I don’t think about it. When I go in and out of my bedroom later in the day, that’s when I notice it and will always make it.
Perhaps I need to make it first thing!

    1. It is just something I do right away, and I’ve honestly got it mostly done before I’m even awake:) I’ve loved this little discipline.

  2. Happy New Year! Do you have a tutorial how to make the bed while a spouse is still sleeping in it? Ha! That said I do love a freshly made bed to start the day, makes a room just feel better.

    1. That totally made me laugh, Jean. That actually is an issue! I almost resent when my husband gets up after I do and I have to remember to go back and make the bed. (He just isn’t as motivated by this discipline as I am!)

  3. It is not just professional organizers saying this!! Check out Admiral William H. McRaven’s #1 New York Times Bestseller book MAKE YOUR BED–Little Things That Can Change Your Life and Maybe the World. He says that if you can’t do the little things right, you won’t do the big things right. Yes, sir!!

    1. Nice to know I am on the same page as an Admiral! That is a powerful thought to ponder today… if you can’t do the little things right, you won’t do the big things right. So true!
