Did you ever notice there are some categories of “stuff” that we just never seem to get around to sorting and organizing? Today’s task in “Select-an-Effort: Organizing Tasks for 2023” tends to be one of these: undergarments.
There are many possible items that fall into this category, including:
- Socks
- Bras
- Boxers/Briefs/Trunks
- Panties
- Lingerie
- Maternity Bras/Underwear
- Slips
- Camisoles
- Spanx™ and foundational garments
- Jock Straps
- Tights
- Hosier
- Long Underwear
Are you ready to dive in? Here are three approaches you can take:
Low Effort
For a quick improvement, do a quick peek at your socks and underwear drawers. Throw out a couple that don’t have a match, have holes, or whose elastic has stretched out of shape.
Medium Effort
To go a bit further, dump out the contents of your sock and underwear drawers. Quickly sort by type (e.g., sport socks, dress socks, warm/wool socks, underwear by type, etc.)
Remove any that you aren’t wearing for any reason. Odds are the ones you don’t want are more suitable for trash than donation.
High Effort
If you want to flex a bit more muscle, extend your decluttering to other categories of undergarments (see list above).
Wipe out your drawers before resetting. If you want to jazz up your storage you can get inserts for organizing things like socks and underwear. They come in a wide variety of options, like these and these. At the same time, a simple shoebox or two inside your drawer can provide a lot of structure for no extra money.
You can also get “fancy” with the way you fold (Konmari™ folding, rolling, etc.) but remember that this isn’t necessary. If having perfectly arranged undergarments brings you joy, head over to Youtube and for ideas.

When is the last time you reviewed your undergarments?

I really need to head to YouTube for ideas. I have so many socks that I have an entire drawer of them. Most have special meaning or are in good shape. I wouldn’t keep socks with holes, unless they were super emotional for whatever reason. Anyway, it’s overkill. Plus with being pregnant, and then not, and then pregnant, and then not, and nursing working well with one and not the other, I have so many maternity and postpartum items I still need to sort. I don’t even know my bra size anymore!

Do any of us really know our bra size LOL?
I think sorting and organizing these supplies is sort of a gift to yourself. It also gives you a chance to clearly identify what, if anything, you might need to get more of.
I do have a couple pair of sentimental socks, but that’s it. My sock storage isn’t huge, so I needed to make space for what I was actually wearing!
This is an area where I am really not organized. I am eager to attack these drawers and clean them out. Mu sock drawer is exploding and I am sure it could be much better organized. I need to make it a priority! Thanks for the nudge.
Usually you will come across enough socks that are unmatched or unloved that you can free up a bit of space. A bit of organization can make you smile every time you open the drawer!
