“Quotes in Action” – Day 29

You have no control over what the other guy does. You only have control over what you do. ~A.J. Kitt

Some people say, “teamwork makes the dream work.” When all members of a team are on the same page, this is a powerful truth. Unfortunately, many of us live and work in situations where not everyone involved has the same priorities. It can be frustrating to work hard on a project or task, only to have our work sabotaged or undone by someone else. Today’s quote gives insight on how to deal with these kinds of circumstances. “You have no control over what the other guy does. You only have control over what you do.” ~ A. J. Kitt

Are you currently frustrated by others? Maybe it is your partner, your coworkers, your children, your parents, or someone else? It’s easy to get upset when we feel undermined or blocked, especially when we are trying hard to make a change or achieve a goal. However, as today’s quote points out, there is often little we can do to change other peoples’ thoughts and behavior. This is why it is important to find a way to pursue our objectives even in the midst of critics, disrupters, and naysayers.

In the world of organizing, I frequently encounter households where one person wants to declutter and establish order while another in the home does not. This can be very discouraging, as the space that has just been set up immediately becomes messy. Today I challenge to you organize a space over which you have primary control. Depending on your situation, this might be your desk, your bathroom drawer, your bedside table, your car, your bag/briefcase, a bookshelf, your closet, or some other space. Pick an area primarily used only by you, so that once you get it set, it won’t get cluttered by others.

Can you think of a space you could organize that keep ordered without interference by anyone else?

  1. We have a weird dynamic here because Cassidy doesn’t like chaos and will super organize his own life and sort of leave us all in the lurch. BUT… sometimes he’s the biggest mess of all and I’m running around putting out small organization fires.
That said, my office is mine alone and I could definitely do that and feel great about it.

    1. Feels great to start with a space that is yours. That way, you have the ability to maintain and tweak your results.

I think it is common for couples to represent different ends of the order spectrum. Then as you point out, sometimes we “break character” and surprise everyone, which can be a lot of fun!
